Since the events of September 11, 2001, the visitor experience to one of America's most iconic monuments -- the Statue of Liberty -- has been reduced, due to enhanced security arrangements and visitor quotas.
The National Park Service and the Statue of Liberty - Ellis Island Foundation are now overseeing a $100 million new-build museum which will be an extension of Liberty Park, providing new sitting, climbing and viewing platforms. The museum will embody best practices for sustainable design including a green, visitor-friendly roof, geothermal systems and daylight optimization. In the aftermath of Hurricane Sandy, the museum will be set above the 500 year flood and wave crest levels and built to sustain hurricane force winds.
The interior of the museum will feature exhibits created by ESI Design including an immersive theater, engagement gallery and an inspiration gallery. The museum will house the original Statue of Liberty torch, which Phelps Construction Group will be moving from its current location in the Statue’s base to the new museum.
