In 2021, a 10-metre-long ichthyosaur, the largest ever found in the UK, was discovered during maintenance work at Rutland Water. Excavated by a team of palaeontologists, the specimen may be the first of its species in the UK. Rutland County Council (RCC), with support from the Levelling Up Fund, is focusing on the conservation and public presentation of a significant paleontological discovery, the Rutland Ichthyosaur fossil. Rutland County Council (RCC), with a grant received from the Levelling Up Fund, is seeking tender submissions from providers with proven experience in fossil conservation and 3D digitisation for the comprehensive de-jacketing, conservation, preparation, mounting, and associated digitisation of the Ichthyosaur fossil. This process involves the detailed handling of delicate fossil material currently encased in plaster-of-paris field jackets. The successful provider will be able to complete the work by the end of March 2026. The anticipated contract commencement date is 21 October 2024, with the contract ending on 30 September 2026. The budget for this contract is £800,000 in its entirety (exclusive of VAT). The Council reserves the right to reject any submissions that are over budget without further evaluation.
