SUMMARY
The Design Museum Gent, in Belgium has announced the winner of the design competition to extend the museum. London-based practice Carmody Groarke have been selected, alongside emerging local practice TRANS architectuur | stedenbouw. The €7.5 million extension will see a new wing built on the undeveloped plot on Drabstraat. The extension is to be known as DING! (Design in Gent) and will link the existing museum buildings, thereby forming the final section of the museum. DING! will have free admission and aims to provide added space for exhibitions, workshops, lectures and debates. The new space will enable the museum to serve as a host for the creative sector. The ground floor will also have a museum café with direct access to the courtyard and a shop that will sell Belgian design products. Construction is estimated to start in 2021 and the project is slated to complete in 2023. (Updated 24 October 2019)
