BUDGET $16,500,000*

The New Brunswick Museum, Saint John, New Brunswick, is Canada’s oldest museum. Planning to expand the museum has been ongoing and progress has been slow due to political changes in the province’s government. In December 2018, the new government cancelled a $50 million contribution towards the original $100 million new build scheme slated for the St. John waterfront promised by the Liberals. Now, renewed proposals from the Hardman Group who operate Market Square where the museum is currently located, suggest that there is available space that backs on to the museum. If this proposal is approved it would mean the renovation and expansion project could be achieved for approximately $22 million (US$16.5 million). This would allow the museum to expand to 132,000 square feet from its current 63,000 square feet. With HVAC and structural issues being addressed at Market Square now, the proposal is more feasible than when first mooted eight years ago. With the museum’s board of trustees and CEO yet to see the detailed proposals in late summer 2019, this project still in its development stages, and our budgets and timescales are estimates.
