Royal Museum EntranceThe National Museums of Scotland is now seeking a Head of Exhibitions and Design.  The post pays in the region of £44,400 to £51,800, plus membership in the Civil Service pension scheme.

National Museums Scotland is one of the UK’s leading museums services with a range of internationally important collections in Scottish history and archaeology, world cultures, natural sciences, science and technology, and art and design.  The Collection of over 4 million objects is displayed at 4 museum sites and across growing digital channels as well as across Scotland and internationally through loans and exhibitions.

The organisation is in the middle of a 15 year Master plan to redevelop the whole National Museum complex, has recently reopened the National Museum of Scotland following a £50 million project which saw transformation of the 150 year old building and included the development of 16 new  galleries. The next stage of the Master plan is now being implemented with the development of a further 10 vibrant and engaging galleries to showcase collections on Art and Design and Science and Technology. Further investment at the National Museum of Flight just outside Edinburgh, will provide a significantly enhanced visitor experience by dynamically re-interpreting the collections.

Exhibitions and Design organises a vibrant exhibition programme across our museums, often working with national and international partners.National Museums will be working with partners in the Netherlands, Russia, North America and Africa on elements of the exhibitions programme. This programme includes ‘blockbusters’ as well as a series of major and smaller temporary exhibitions to engage new and existing audiences with inspirational content.

National Museums Scotland is seeking to appoint a Head of Exhibitions & Design to lead the  newly created Department. Candidates for the role will be highly creative with a proven track record of success to develop and follow through great ideas for exhibitions, displays and programming. You will be able to provide vision and leadership to the team to deliver excellence and innovative solutions as well as demonstrating excellent project management skills and a real understanding of best practice in the field across the UK and internationally.
